The Government College for Girls was established in July 1956 and in the 52nd year of its proud existence has continued to produce students who have excelled in academics, sports and cultural fields. The college motto “Courage to Know” inspires the students to strive for and seek that which is best in thought, word and deed. In recognition of its outstanding all-round performance, the college has been accredited with A Grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
We offer graduation courses in Humanities, Science, Commerce, Media Studies and Computer Applications. Post-Graduate courses are offered in six subjects and though these courses are relatively new, our students have fared very well in the university examinations. Every academic year our students win a number of merit positions in the Panjab University examinations. In addition to this our students excel in various extra-curricular activities, bringing home prizes and trophies from inter-college and inter-university competitions. We offer Merit Scholarships and Scholarships for the underprivileged. Our college faculty consists of some of the best minds in different disciplines which keep pace with the ever widening frontiers of knowledge.
The college campus has three hostels which accommodate about 550 girl students. With excellent facilities, which have recently been upgraded to include internet connectivity, high powered music systems, LCD televisions, reading rooms with the latest magazines and newspapers, access to a gymnasium, hygienic food, laundry facilities, STD / PCO and a dispensary, we provide our students a home away from home. A nurse is on the premises to look after the resident students. In case of an emergency a patient can be taken to the hospital also, while waiting for the parents / guardians to arrive.
The college library is well stocked with 81,000 books, 145 journals and periodicals and 15 newspapers. It offers a pleasant ambience for reading and research. There are isolated reading rooms for those who like to work in solitude. The faculty has been provided with a research room for academic pursuits. Keeping in step with the IT revolution all the departments of our college have Internet connectivity. In fact, over the last one year there has been a complete overhaul in the infrastructure that we provide to our faculty and students – the latest addition being a well-equipped gymnasium. The campus is a mini world in itself – eating places, cafes, cyber cafes, a general merchant shop, a beauty parlour, a tailor, a recreational garden and of course a bank.
It has been a long and pleasurable journey for our institution from the 1950’s to the explosion of information in the 21st century.
